Shame, videos no longer found. I've been looking for something online to show original sword making techniques, but the ones I've found tend to use modern equipment.

I know they did this on Time Team once, but that was an Anglo-Saxon sword, not Viking, anyway. :)

Lol! I was about to post a reminder that the Celts sacked Rome in the 4th century, and the legions changed a lot over the following centuries, so plenty of opportunity for cross pollination even before the Romans marched into Spain. :)

Cheers for the replies, much appreciated. :) There are swords with side slits in the sheaths. Curiously, that's one solution I was thinking as well. I wouldn't have expected a 2H carried on the back to be drawn fast like smaller swords, and I'd presume exposing the blade to the elements would be kep...

How to draw a 2H sword from sheath?

A research question on the use of the 2H sword. The question is, how would a two hander be drawn from its sheath, especially if worn at your back? It's just that I figure the sword would need the sheath adapting for drawing sideways from the back, and I'm not sure that's going to be very practical. ...
