Re: Cheap bench grinder at aldi for budding knifemakers...

Theres no point in putting in a smaller motor, just to upgrade it... Any lining up of parts, etc will just need to be undone to install the new motor. May as well just go for the big one. Plus a smaller motor will use a smaller shaft, which means I'll need to make 2 sizes of drive wheel. The motors ...

Re: Cheap bench grinder at aldi for budding knifemakers...

Yeah... Seems like a perfectly reaosnable little grinder. As for my big one... The frame is built, I've got a nice 3hp electric motor ready to go. I just need a few finishing touches, make a drive wheel and she'll be ready for the first fine tuning. So in theory... Should be about a days work in the...

Re: Yet Another Odd Question.......

Their usually made out of spring steels for maximum durability. Making a cutting edge in one would take you the rest of your life with hand tools... Unless you anealed it. "spring steels" on the whole, can take edges but they very thing that makes them durable, makes them unable to take a hard edge ...

Re: Twisted?

You dont know what caused the twist, so you cant use it. It may be a flawed heat treatment, it could be a structural issue in the steel, it could have been a factory issue badly fixed or badly produced, it may have caused a micro fracture in the edge... It would be really stupid to try and use it. J...

Re: Twisted?

I had a look along the length of the blade & you can defiantly see a 'lean' It's straight at the Habaki, but by the time it has reached the Kisaki it is over by about 3mm, it's almost as if the blade is like,an old wall, the further along you get, the more it's unsupported and falls over, my main w...

Re: Twisted?

Look down the spine of the blade, guard to tip... If theres a bend, you'll see it.

Re: When Sharpening Goes Wrong!

Thing is... Swords shouldnt be fantastically sharp. Thats how edges get damaged. And to shapen 3 feet of blade is exceptionally hard. You have to remain consistent over the entire length in terms of pressure, speed and angle. Managing all 3 at the same time is tricky at best... Just leave it.

This sort of stuff has always interested me... Its amazing the stuff you can make with a bit of common sense and some tools. Offline I've seen all sorts of questionable designs and items. And all stuff that wouldnt break if tested... Nice action...

Re: For those interested... Bench grinder design.

Update, for those interested.... I decided to lift up the machine more, so I can put the VFD underneath it and put a little perspex door on the front to cover it. And maybe half of the sides... Currently looks like this... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/Glaive/IMG-20130415-00781_zps6f62019d.j...

That would entirely depend on which time you were talking about... Im reasonably sure it happened about 10 times. lol... Every time it got recinded. It was quite the rollercoaster.
