Sword use in MAs

Post by Morbeus » Sat Sep 09, 2006 5:14 pm

After reading around the forums a bit a question formed itself in my mind. Although there are some MAs that are completely dedicated to use of the sword, i.e Kendo, Kenjutsu etc, there are some that incorporate it's use such as JuJutsu and NinJutsu.

I was wondering how the techniques of the sword in a primarily unarmed MA might differ from those in a 'dedicated' one. Comments anyone?

In some unarmed martial arts such as aikido, the techniques are based on sword's use, such as the hand positions, and the cutting motions done by the arms, and so on. As far as I know, most traditional arts included both armed and unarmed techniques, so they used the same motions. Just these days, they've separated into separate armed and unarmed arts.

Short answer: Don't think there is much difference.
