Post by Master Dragoon » Tue Oct 07, 2003 10:50 pm

Ok im confuzed

I always thought of rapiers as Schlaeger bladed but you can get foil blades and epee blades so other than shape whats the difference between them ie fighting styles etc

thanks

I would be intrigued to see a proper Schlager saber fencing match the way the German students did it (and still do it though it is illegal). The face is uncovered with only the eyes covered (with mesh metal goggles) and the neck bound with cloth. Hard leather covers the body and heavy gauntlets protect the hands. the match is a first blood match, the first to score a nasty heavily bleeding gash on the face or forehead of the opponent wins. As close as possible to the old idea of the duel because you know that either you'll inflict some serious damage or you get scarred for life, which must focus the mind somewhat. Before the howls of protest roll in that sport fencing is still upholding the duelling tradition I would ask you to consider this: How would your sport fencing techniques change if that blade in your hand were real as were your opponents and the only way to walk away is if one of you dies......

http://www.campusrecreation.swt.edu/Spo ... asics.html. This tells of the three fencing blades Epee, foil and sabre and the differences in target areas etc. The Schlager is a kind of saber rapier hybrid that is used in the German Mensur duels mentioned above.
