If you were to get a custom sword...

Post by Jaques » Sat Feb 05, 2005 11:14 pm

Just write down what you would have if you could get a custom sword made. Rules of the thread:
- Money's not an issue
- Must be realistic, no fire spouting master swords, as cool as that would be.

Btw, if anything I put here can't be done, please point it out. I am after all, an idiot and likely to get things wrong.

- I'd have a Katana
- Folded Carbon Steel, full tang blade
- Damascus blade
- White silk or leather (silk would pick up dirt and me marked my sweat wouldn't it?) wrap (ito?)
- Black rayskin tsuka
- Tsuba mainly black depicting a mountain range on one side and on the other side one of those awesomely cool buildings that Daimyo lived in, you know what I mean
- Black Tsuka-Gashira with a minitue golden katana engraved on it
- 28" blade
- 9/32" thick blade
- Blade width the same as CSSK (dunno what it is exactly)
- Little gold samurai with naginata under the wrap (menkugi?)
- White lacquer saya
- Last 6" of saya wrapped in black rayskin
- Black sageo
- 13" tuska (to compensate for the heavy blade)
- Groove on blade

I don't think I've missed anything out....it'd be a pretty sweet ass sword.

.
the folding of the steel produces the hada pattern which is reavealed during the final stages of polish, the nature of a damascus blades construction the layering and forge welding of 2 or more different steels means that its one or the other in terms of construction, in other words its pointless to have both methods employed it the construction of one blade as the efect of the damascus construction cancels out the effect of the folding in visual and practical terms....

the folding and production of a hamon temper line during the heat treatment is the hallmark of a traditionally constructed japanese sword, the damascus construction method is mainly employed today in making high end "art" swords which are non the less fully functional the pattern which is visable is the revealing of the different steels in the blade by the use of an etchant solution (usually ferric chloride).

its up to you to decide what visual style appeals to you the most before contacting a smith to begin a commision for a sword (or a blade) isssues around the construction methods and choices involved are best disscussed with the smith.

hear is a close up picture of the pattern on my custom damacus gladius(so you can see the pattern properly) its the sword that i have always wanted to have made.

Image

you can clearly see the pattern in this picture (taken with my mates 1400 quid sony camera)

kind regards

f*ck me!

That is sweet! However I'd rather have a functional katana - so I'd opt for a folded, not demascus blade.

both construction methods would produce a functional sword the only differences would be cosmetic.

kind regards

Custom for me would have to be either a fully functional likeness of striders ranger sword or as has been said previously, functional anduril. Love those swords

I would like 2.
The first being a replica of Stormbringer
from the Hawkwind album cover of
Chronicle of the black sword.
Fully functional , ofcourse :) .
The second, and I didnt knick the idea from Darksun,
Id fantasised about this before his gladius post,
would be the Celtic excalibur.
I have seen something close to what Id like
on a smiths site (cant link but Im sure some of you know. )
Alfric would be the basic design but hand and a half or 2 handed
and some other changes too.
Regards
Storm
