sharpening a kukri

Post by alexdark17 » Sun May 17, 2009 11:56 pm

Anyone got any advice on how to sharpen a kukri? I'm a beginner and so's my friend. He's ordered a Japanese wetstone to do it with. He's only done kitchen knives before. Any advice?

thank you

depends on what edge it has already....

easiest way to sharpen a convex edge is with sandpaper (wet and dry) and a phonebook with a stropping action. work your way through the grits 600 to as high as you can find there are 60,000 grit out there but i have only gone to 2000 and then stropped with leather and got a mirror edge.

even if its got a secondary bevel it would be worth convexing it, if you dont want to I would say get a spyderco sharpmaker, no need to buy expensive stones that will be hard to use on a recurve edge like a kukri, the sharp maker puts a shaving sharp edge on any knife very quickly ;)
