Dollar to Pound ratio?

Postby liquidator96 » Thu Feb 13, 2014 8:29 am

Having a trawl through all the knife places on the net & I've noticed that knives in America are much cheaper than over here, on average a knife costing $50 in the U.S. will normally cost £50 over here, now I know that the exchange rate is not what it was back in the day & yes there are import costs, but surely this wouldn't add up to a 1 to 1 price comparison, can anyone enlighten me?

Importing knives from the USA is no longer viable in my experience.
1. You pay for the knife + the postage.
2. You pay Duty on the knife + postage.
3. You pay VAT on the total of knife + postage + Duty.
4. You pay a handling fee to the courier or Royal Mail.

Work it out here Dave. ;)
Example from above...
Spyderco knife costing $50 + $25 postage = £54 landed cost to you.

Far better to buy one from a UK retailer and get it within a day or so with good customer service - returning a faulty knife to the USA can be a nightmare.

OK, it can be a bit of a PITA if you're not used to it, so a rough guide for knives is the price plus postage in $US, add 23%, then convert to £GB and you won't be very far off.
