Ok???!! This is fascinating! Mick, you may know of our regions Celtic history? but I've just found out that the Romans took alot of our military styles after they invaded, take a look at some of these from ancient Brigantes.
I thought the Celtic swords drew inspiration from the roman gladius but it's the reverse, they also took our helmet and rectangle shields. :brows:

Sorry to disappoint you but having read a few books on the subject in the past the romans already had the gladius before they came to our shores. After the romans defeated the spaniards they adopted the gladius from them as they were impressed by its efficiency.

Lol! I was about to post a reminder that the Celts sacked Rome in the 4th century, and the legions changed a lot over the following centuries, so plenty of opportunity for cross pollination even before the Romans marched into Spain. :)

Geordie,
Those drawings are of Imperial Roman legionaries.
This is what the Roman legionaries occupying Briton, dress would of looked like.
The actual weapons shown were Brigante.
I think all of you should reread your history books.

Check out this site for what various armies of antiquity would look like;

I have the book on the brigantes, primarily because they migrated to the area of the north east I live in, I was fascinated to learn that the romans adapted their weapons and armour from the brigantes.
