what oil to use on The Outback?

Postby Lone Wolf » Wed Aug 06, 2014 1:10 pm

Just got my Outback today, it says in the care leaflet don't use mineral oil, use vegetable oil, which vegetable oil is best?
looking round I've got extra virgin olive oil, organic sunflower oil, coconut oil and sweet almond oil, any of them any good for the job?

I don't use vegetable oil on mine in case it gose rancid and causes problems
better off using a proper leather treatment product like I use on mine i.e carrs leather oil
or leather rejuvenator from superdrug both available from amazon (use either on the handle and sheath)
oh and because of the high polish on the blade don't store the blade in its sheath main reason being
even a leather sheath will ruin the finish after its been put in and drawn out a couple of times (unless you intend using it in which case it don't matter)
and watch the clip point its as sharp as the main cutting edge .

I bought a bottle of vegetable oil and will just use that and see how it goes thanks, I googled Carr's turns out its mineral oil and resin. So I'll use what it says on the care instructions.

its up to you its your knife but carrs dose not contain mineral oil or rezin (the type I use)it would defeat the point of using it but carrs dose
make a dozen different leather treatments the second one down is what I use on all my leather knife sheaths and leather handles
and any decent mineral oil on my blades either stainless carbon or Damascus steel

I'm cautious, it says no mineral oil, and Carrs has it in both the neatsfoot and leather oil.

http://www.carrdaymartin.com/product_details.html?cid=MQ==&pid=Nw==

It says food grade vegetable oil and thats what I used if it causes problems they can replace it, I just followed the instructions.

Yours is lighter then mine, my one was very dark from the start but during soaking the colours came through vibrantly, a mix of grays, blacks, dark browns and 2 bright red, but sadly it faded again to very dark afterwards.

Yours also looks smoother, mine has a slight suede like feel to it, I'm hoping its meant to be like that.

That is strange, do they all have similar handles?

all the handles except one are made the same way e.i leather with brass fittings
the odd one out is the death adder with a full tang and ebony handle scales
